The Bank of Namibia is proud to announce the launch of the N$60.00 Commemorative Banknote in honour of Dr. Hage G. Geingob, a historical tribute to a leader whose vision and dedication contributed to shaping of the nation. Unveiled earlier today, the special edition banknote serves as a lasting recognition of Dr. Geingob’s life of service and steadfast dedication to Namibia’s democracy, economic progress, and social inclusion.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, President of the Republic of Namibia, emphasised that this initiative is a lasting tribute to Dr. Geingob. "This commemorative banknote immortalises Dr. Geingob’s steadfast leadership and lifelong commitment to peace, unity, and resilience. Through this banknote, we honour his achievements and inspire future generations to uphold the values he championed."
The President further highlighted that Dr. Geingob’s legacy is deeply rooted in his commitment to unity, inclusivity, and social justice. "His dedication to inclusivity and unity was a hallmark of his leadership. He envisioned and championed the “One Namibian House,” a metaphor that resonates deeply. His policies reflected this vision, from advancing social grants for the vulnerable and elderly to ensuring that all Namibians, regardless of their ethnicity and gender, had a place in the story of our nation," said President Mbumba.
The Vice President and President-elect, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, echoed the sentiments of the President, emphasising that Namibia must move forward while upholding the dreams and aspirations of the late Dr Sam Nujoma, the Founding President and Father of the Namibian Nation whom Namibia laid to rest over the weekend. She highlighted that the vision of Dr Nujoma and Dr Geingob for an inclusive Namibia premised on unity in diversity should be Namibia’s guiding principle.
The Governor of the Bank of Namibia, Mr. Johannes !Gawaxab, described the issuance of this commemorative banknote as an endeavour to honouring the long-lasting legacy of the late President. "Among his many achievements, he spearheaded the establishment of the Welwitschia Fund, Namibia’s sovereign wealth fund, ensuring that the wealth derived from our nation’s natural resources is preserved and utilised for the prosperity of future generations. This fund stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication to economic sustainability, social development, and intergenerational equity."
The Governor further emphasised that the introduction of the N$60.00 commemorative banknote upholds the long-standing tradition of issuing high-quality banknotes and coins that earn the trust and confidence of the Namibian public. "Issuing the N$60.00 banknote may prompt inquiries regarding its significance. The explanation underscoring the denomination of 60 is straightforward: Dr. Geingob devoted 60 years of his life to the selfless service of this nation, encompassing his time in exile, his return, and his leadership in an independent Namibia. Thus, the number 60 carries profound symbolic meaning, reflecting his extensive commitment to the country throughout these decades.
The Dr. Hage G. Geingob Commemorative Banknote is designed to blend artistry, innovation, and security, ensuring both durability and historical significance. Printed on polymer, the banknote features a portrait of Dr. Geingob in a transparent window, symbolising his lasting impact on the nation. Advanced security features include coloured intaglio print, Argentum silver ink, and gold accents, which become visible when tilted while the Independence Memorial Museum is showcased in a secondary
transparent window, reinforcing national pride and resilience.
Embedded micro text reading "Forward Ever, Backward Never, 60" pays tribute to Dr. Geingob’s philosophy, while raised tactile dots ensure accessibility for the visually impaired. The banknote also incorporates mirror-like ink effects, a rolling bar colour-change feature on the Bank of Namibia logo, and a custom serial number starting with ‘HGG’ in honour of Dr. Geingob. Under UV light, hidden design elements such as the Namibian flag and a glowing “60” numeral further enhance its uniqueness.
To ensure that Namibians fully appreciate the significance of this commemorative banknote, the Bank of Namibia will roll out an extensive public education campaign to familiarise the nation with the unique features of this commemorative banknote ahead of its official issuance on 17 March 2025.
The Dr. Hage G. Geingob Commemorative Banknote will circulate alongside existing banknotes and coins serving both as a legal tender and a collector’s item. This banknote symbolises the Bank of Namibia’s commitment to preserving national identity through currency while honouring key figures and milestones that have shaped the country’s history.
